Project name: The next generation of Fife’s environmental champions and workforce

Lead organisation: Falkland Stewardship Trust on behalf of the Fife Rural Skills Partnership

Project partners: Fife Rural Skills Partnership which comprises: Cambo Heritage Trust, The Ecology Centre, Living Solutions, Rural Skills Scotland, Opportunities Fife, Forestry Commission Scotland,  Fife Voluntary Action, Fife Coast and Countryside Trust.

Project summary:   

This programme will:

  1. Enable young people in Fife to gain new skills to finding jobs, training, volunteer opportunities or starting entrepreneurial projects that contribute to the green economy
  1. Achieve a net gain in the built and natural environment across the rural and urban settings of Fife. It will help young people (15-24) across Fife into sustainable jobs, businesses and other positive destinations.

Working with partners the Fife Rural Skills Partnership, the project will create a clear pathway into practical environmental management work through a three-staged approach:

  • Level 1 – beginner level: work experience, academies, voluntary placements
  • Level 2 – apprenticeship level from 6 months to 1 year
  • Level 3 – social enterprise level: provision of ‘incubator hubs’ with both expert and peer-to-peer mentoring and practical support to create sustainable businesses managing the environment and natural resources.

Young people can enter at any level according to experience.

Project outcomes: 

  • Level 1 (beginner level): 220 young people engaged
  • Level 2 (apprentice level): 30 apprenticeships
  • Level 3 (entrepreneur level): 20 young people engaged.
